Mandala Dyeing Workshop

$160.00

This is a basic workshop in the folding and dyeing of cloth to create a beautiful mandala. It has been a while since we have done a mandala workshop!

What is a mandala?

The word mandala itself is derived from the root word manda, which means essence, to which the suffix la, meaning container, has been added. From Wikipedia, “In common use, mandala has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.”

In this workshop we will strive as beginners to capture this essence and contain it on a bit of cloth using dye and patience. We will practice perfecting the mandala center known as the “seed”, the starting point, by carefully folding and later applying dye by various methods. Moving outward we can contemplate the emerging shapes-circles, squares, and the 4 directions. This may lead us to think about the universe, our universe, our world, spatial relationships and balance.

We will be using cotton and silk, colored dyes and indigo.

All materials and supplies are included. If you have your own special tools or supplies, feel free to bring them along.
The workshop welcomes beginners and long time practitioners-it’s a friendly environment where beginners learn alongside experienced practitioners!

As always, beginners are welcome and will have the opportunity to try all sorts or techniques as well as new ones.

Workshop price includes all the necessary materials, but feel free to bring along any fabric you may want to work with- just make sure it is a natural fiber (no poly, nylon or blends).
